So Sunday I went to another shiai, this time at Tohoku itself. First off, let me say I enjoyed the Tohoku set up more-it was looser, more learning oriented, and they had the adults fight first, then have exhibition matches until the kids showed up. At Foxboro they had us interspersed, which probably meant a shorter day for the club running the shiai, but meant less mat time. I also enjoyed that Black Belt Jr. and the Belorussian Battler also competed, and that St. Petra was nice enough to show up to give us advice and cheer us on. A totally different experience!

Also totally different was that out of five matches, I lost 3, and it was all against white belts. I can tell myself that at least one of the guys was much more energetic than I was and that energy took me off guard, or that the other two guys I fought (I fought two of them twice) had experience in other arts-Sambo and Ju-Jitsu-but that feels like excuses. In any case, here's how the matches went:

So and interesting couple of days...first Judo was terribly hot and humid on Thursday night. I got through it okay, Mike Z gave me some good tips during Uchikomis, but we ended with 4 man randori, alternating so we didn't sweat to death. What made that crazy was after I went up against Ju-Jitsu John (who devastated me through his usual combo of dominate gripping and technique) and Jeff Chandler (who I managed to get an Ouchi-Gari on, but who also managed to throw me a few times), then I went up against Sensei the Younger, which was really educational in a getting thrown a lot sort of way, and finally I went up against "The Chiropractor", a returning black belt who went at me totally defensively-and still managed to Tomo-nage (i.e. Captain Kirk) me pretty astoundingly. Oh, yeah, and Max Sterling managed to beat on me pretty bad again...wiry guys...I just don't know how to fight them. So aside from the deadly humidity/heat combo a pretty good night.

Then yesterday I got up late, scrambled to pick up Stalwart Dan, drive down to CT, dig the guns and ammo out of my mom's house, drive over to Sis Mortis's, drop off BVH who graciously agreed to watch Baby M, then drive over to the range, got lost twice on the way there, but we finally got there. Stalwart and I had a good time trying to figure out how to throw skeet and missing it a lot with my dad's 20-gauge side-by-side shotgun, but we eventually went through all the ammo he had in the house (and managed to kill a whopping six clays between us in something like 80 shots), then we went over to join both of my uncles and Sis Mortis to shoot some .22s. I had a good time seeing everyone and bsing and shooting, so I hope we can make it down again soon. We also got some kick-ass South Indian vegetarian food at a newish take-out place in Middletown-the pickings just get better and better there.

So Judo has been going well. I went to my first tournament on Sunday and I actually did better than I thought I might. I won one match against a green belt (one rank higher than I, though he was lighter and shorter than I was) with a really nice O Ouchi-Gari and then Tai-Otoshi combo, and then I lost the other three matches, against two brown belts and a black belt. I was just happy that I had one good match, and that I put up a decent fight in the others. I've also identified a few things I need to work on: one, I need to attack more often. You can be penalized for not attacking enough, and I got called on this three times (though only penalized once). Second, I need to get the etiquette and rules down so I know what to do and what's going on. Third, my ground game needs work. I got put in a choke hold very easily and lost a match that way, and in another match I had a good shot at getting a pin in but I didn't move fast enough. Finally, in the match I won the guy was constantly ending up in a turtle position after failed throws and I should have been turning him over-they didn't really even let me try as I moved so slow. I also need to keep building my stamina and my ability to create and exploit opportunities to throw; quite a few times I felt locked up.

Still, it was a good day, and I felt like last nights class went well too. There's a local tournament next weekend, and I hope to make it to that; ideally I'd like to make every nearby tournament I can to get some more experience and to fight different styles of opponents. I'm very happy so far.

The Baroness and I also had our second anniversary on Saturday, but to make up for the fact that I had to work, and late, too, we did our celebrating on Monday. We had a little picnic lunch and then went to the MFA and looked at a few exhibits and then when we got home BVH made an AWESOME chocolate cake...mmm. Pretty low key but a very nice day!

Definitely feel better after another week. Plus my wrist is feeling better. So things are looking up. However, remember kids, wash your damn gis. I'm not going to name names but there were some mighty stinky ones last night.

We had some Clash of the Titans action going on last night. Ajax and Fast Eddie and myself in one ground fighting round robin. The ground match I had with Eddie was probably the worst fighting I've done in a while; all someone would have had to do was bite someone else's leg and we'd have fit right into a John Ford movie (see the wedding fight from The Searchers to know what I mean). This was some terribly unskilled stuff. On the plus side we worked on a technique I liked and I didn't die out there quite as bad as I did on Tuesday (when ground fights with Fast Eddie and then Ajax and then a standing fight with Ajax resulted in me nearly dropping from exhaustion). On the other hand The Canadian Crusher handed my ass to me on a silver platter (I disagree with his assessment that I didn't use a single technique in the match; I'd say I didn't use a single good or effective one..;)), as I have come to expect from him.

That's Judo for the week.

It would say "World's Worst Judoka". I got fucking owned last night. Hell, Stallone nearly beat me on the ground and in randori and I outweigh him by like 120 lbs. Admittedly my wrist was fucked still, but come on. Then I went up against Ajax (like a sea wall for the Tohoku) and got chewed out for being too stiff. I just wasn't sure how to handle him. I'm used to being much bigger than the people I fight, and here I was up against a guy that probably has 50 lbs. on me and maybe ten inches. Totally crazy and I barely held him off until he turned one of my own throws against me and dropped me. Suck ass. Plus one of the Monday-Wednesday crowd black belts tossed me and I landed right on my shoulder, which is still fucked up today. It was a pretty bad night. Definitely I am regretting taking off the two Tuesdays I skipped due to travel fatigue and laziness. Lame. I also gotta get back on the non-Judo fitness wagon, because I think if I wasn't constantly out of breath I might have time to actually fight.

Oh, yeah, I forgot one other thing: last Tuesday was an awesome night for Judo for me, with several things seeming to finally come together; I even finally got a hit on Ippon Seoinage, which was pretty unbelievable as the entire time I did Judo as a kid I never got remotely close to doing so. Thursday, sadly, didn't seem to be as clear, but I still feel like my ground game is improving quite a bit and that I'm at least starting to get the gripping a bit better. Now if I could just figure out how to choke a bitch, I'd be all set.

Tags:
1) Do not (and I mean do not) take Advil on a semi-empty stomach right before Judo.

2) If I hear the instruction 50 or more times, eventually I'll get to the point where I'm ready for the instruction to sink in and it will help. In this case it was the oft-repeated "the off balance to Ippon Seionage is like looking at your watch".

3) I don't know how to choke, not really. This has got to get rectified soon, it's just too damn useful.

4) Hooking legs is good. Must remember to hook legs

5) Sensei Vic's workout is tough. I nearly threw up at several points. After taking 4 minute turns as the attacker on the ground (with 1 min turns as defender while you waited/recovered from your turn), which, admittedly, wasn't so bad, we moved on to the following routine: Grip fight for one minute, randori (spar) for one minute, then "Ten, ten and ten"-i.e. ten push-ups, ten sit-ups, and then either ten squat thrusts or ten "jump-overs" (i.e. on guy gets down on all fours and turtle's up, the other guy jumps over him from one side to the other). Clearly I need to get back off my ass and back to doing non-Judo exercise as often as I can.

6) We were shown and interesting grip fighting move that seemed to make a lot of sense as a throw lead-in, something I need a lot of work on.

All in all, a very good class-made it through warm ups in good shape, managed to put together something I've been told to make it work (it felt like my throws during stunt man practice were better but it's hard to tell) and during randori I managed to get a pretty good Tai o Toshi in-I really need to practice that one. It was my favorite throw during the last period of doing judo as a kid (i.e. the period when I briefly got a bit more serious about it and started to actually win matches) and I feel like I can sometimes even get into it pretty good. Plus there was a few pointers I was given that I hope will help my god-awful ground game. I always feel pretty silly getting beaten by guys who are much smaller than me but I guess that's actually part of the problem.

So I dreamed that I was taking the 86 bus to work. I ran across the street while waiting to get a coffee at the coffee shop, where Rosario Dawson, who is a friend of mine, encourages me to get together with her later. I tell her that I'm not interested, and married, and she gives me her number in case I change my mind. Then I have to hold the bus so a Mount Ida student worker can get on. This stresses me out to no end. The end.

Anyhow, an amazing piece of wishful thinking.

Meanwhile, in the real world, my back is killing me, and has been since judo last week. I'm going to have to be more careful this week. Usually judo makes it feel better, so hopefully it will.

So this week Judo was interesting...on the one hand my muscles and especially my hands haven't ached this much since I started. Tuesday I spent my randori time getting my ass kicked. Last night was a bit better; for one thing Stone was back and so the contest to decide the Last of the Goldfarb Judo Fighters was on again and it's always nice to have someone to commiserate with-it's good to have a good friend in there with me. I also got to go up against Black Belt Jr. (guy's dad was a black belt and showed up once) and the Skinny, whom I had yet to go up against, and that was interesting. The Skinny uses a very odd grip and was pretty tough-I was getting thrown a lot. I did manage to figure out how to get him down once and the different styles are good to see. BB Jr. was a bit different. He's newer than me at this, and much lighter, so I was able to throw him a lot, but he got in some good ones too-he's faster and has some good technique; I think if he could do off balance a bit better he would've kicked my ass because I usually only got him when he made the mistake of trying to over-strength me. Going up against Stone was interesting as it was the first time. Stone's got some interesting stuff-leg grabs, and a good foot sweep-and he unsurprisingly moves a lot better than me, so it makes for an interesting fight. I still don't get how to do Ippon Seionage.

I'm also wondering how much I'm doing things via strength and mass. I'm not a terribly strong guy, but I do have a lot of weight, and it puts me in a bad position in some ways-yeah, it's an advantage (and I think a lot of the guys avoid going up against me because of it) but I feel like that might really be all I've got as far as an advantage at this point and I need to learn technique. I need to toughen up, too, and actively try to get the few guys near my weight to practice with me. I think I avoid it because I find them both pretty damned intimidating-220 pound brown belts tend to be that way. It doesn't help that Odysseus has a tendency to throw me onto the non-puffy mats during Stuntman Practice and that shit hurts. Still, it's pretty dumb-when I've work with both of the big guys they've been very helpful. I am still hoping to loose some more weight (down to 249 again, so that's 16 pounds since September-slow progress, but progress) so we'll see how that goes.

I also did some ground work and some of the new influx of returning brown and black belts have given me some great pointers. One of them is absolutely insanely good at moving on the mat and managed to choke me with one leg at one point. I think he also got my leg into a leg lock, which was also new. He helped me out with some pointers though, so I think I'm at least starting to learn-Stone did too, which was good. At this point I need all the help I can get. So it's going well, and I'm still having a good time with it. Which is really all I can ask for.

I made it into the dojo twice this week and both times I did some ground work and some randori. Both times my ass got beat pretty bad. I've got a lot to learn about placement, grips, getting the grip I want and stopping the opponent from getting the grip he wants, getting/making/taking advantage of set ups for throws and how to defend against chokes and arm bars (and hopefully I'll get taught some of these techniques as well since right now my entire ground game is the basic mat holds). For that matter I'd love to get a chance to work on some other techniques, chiefly (I think) Ko Ouchi Gari (you use an off balance move that's basically like pulling a bow-pushing forward with one arm while holding back the other-and then you sweep the inside of the leg) and Taiatoshi (where you throw a guy over your extended leg after turning away from him and pulling him off balance), techniques I loved back in the day. Mostly I just need to learn how to move better and to be less stiff; I think the rest of these "I need tos" will have to wait until I can at least do that. I'm also going to have to train more on non-judo time so that I can last during randori; one thing I remember thinking Tuesday night is that there needs to be more movies where people get tired during a fight, because that could make for a nice change of pace. Of course I guess a big, slow, sloppy fight with two big out of shape guys is probably not what people want from a film...

I've had a lingering cough but no other symptoms of a cold or sickness. This made me consider skipping Judo both Tuesday and Thursday this week, but each time I relented and decided to show up, and I kept the coughing to a minimum each time. Each time I've felt 100% better after going. Anyways, I was super happy I went last night, because I finally got to do some randori (sparring practice). Stone who's been doing this with me has been at the "adults table", as I call it, for quite a while, while I've been at the kids table. I've been doing things from fall and roll practice to technique practice (ukemi, I think it's called) to what I call "stunt man practice", which is when you line up in a line and the guy who's "it" throws each person in the line once or twice and then the next person is "it" and the "it" guy goes back into the line to be thrown. So basically each person takes his turn being the hero of a martial arts film who throws his attackers, who all come politely one at a time and don't attack or resist. Anyhow, while I have enjoyed the practice, I always dread when there's a plethora of new guys who need to learn to fall, because then it's back to slapping the mats while I watch Stone and The Plumber (another guy who started around when I did) off in randori. From what I understand Stone occasionally wouldn't mind switching places with me because he gets precious little chance to learn techniques, which we both need.

In depth Judo thoughts ahead )

So I was sick for about two weeks with a nasty cold/bronchitis thing. I finally went in and got prescribed some antibiotics, and it cleared up. Which meant that I missed a couple of weeks of Judo (and didn't get much other exercise, and ate poorly). Which means that today, two days after my first day back, I am sore as hell. It probably didn't help that Stone was off with the big kids fighting, which meant I was working with a guy who was actually my size (I feel bad for Stone when he works with me now)-and we were doing Ippon Seionage, or One Arm Shoulder Throw, which meant I lifted a guy who weights just under 250 lbs 40 or 50 times. The practice nearly killed me, too. I can't slack so much, I guess. I walked the 4 miles that Sensei has tasked me with yesterday, and I'm going to try and do it every day that I can when I don't ride in to work. I also am supposed to do 100 sit-ups a day, and the two sets of 50 I did yesterday are probably also feeding into the all-over soreness I have. Tonight I get to go at it again-hopefully I won't be so sore that it makes it harder than it was yesterday (I'm hoping it will be easier).

All soreness aside, I'm really enjoying the Judo and I'm looking forward to doing some fighting practice (the groundwork, less so-I've never been a huge fan of groundwork, which isn't to say I'm not going to try and get better, just that I'm not as excited about the prospect of it). I am now doing three throws, which is nice, and I feel more comfortable at the dojo. Now I just need to get into better shape so it will go easier. Before the sickness I was down to 249, which, although still astronomically off from where I should be it was the first time I've been below 250 in far too long. Between Halloween and sickness I shot back up to 257-256 so I gotta get back down. I can only assume that Judo, 3-4 miles of walking or 9-10 miles of biking a day and 100 sit-ups a day is going to move me back in that direction. I'm trying to get back to eating better again, too, but that's been going less well-I seem to get absolutely starving at some point each day and I am weak, weak, weak. I've also had a touch of insomnia the last few days that is irksome, and which lead to me being way too tired to bike in today. I really want to get back on track with that too-the goal was to ride in every day that wasn't too extreme weather wise that I didn't have to drive somewhere else for work or which I wasn't work 2nd shift but I haven't biked in far too long. So I gotta get back on these things. But overall I'm pretty happy with what's going on and I hope to continue.

Enough navel gazing for now.

Sep. 26th, 2007 @ 07:06 pm What's up
So let's see, what else has been going on? Last Friday night we went over to Photo Jen and Glenbert's to play munchkin, along with Kimenstein, the Ant Queen, and Shmoovac who was in from the other coast for training. Then the next day we went out to Wilmington again to hit the roller derby-for once the team I was rooting for, the Boston Massacres, was able to pull off a (devestating) win. The Ant Queen was out as their mascot, Pinchy McMasshole, in other words she was in a lobster costume topped off by a tri-corner hat and a rifle. Bizarro Tim and Queen Kamayhemmayhem were also in attendance, though the Queen is not yet out skating with a team.

Monday I went to my first German class, which was very basic but interesting so far. Our teacher is from Bavaria which means he has a slightly different take on the language, but since I always find regionalism very interesting, it is only improving things. Since I've also started going to judo with Stone, this means that this is officially my "Facist Fall"-all I really need is some kind of Italian thing and I'll have all the Axis countries represented. Unfortunately the Baroness couldn't make the first class-she's been very sick, as have I, really, with a nasty cold that is just not going away.

Other movie viewing of late has included The Funhouse. It's funny, every fall when I should just go to a fair or carnival, I instead end up watching this flick instead. Part of it is that I'm lazy and that the Baroness isn't really interested in going to one; but part is that what a fair is when I was a kid and what it is to me now don't really mesh up all that well. I mean, they're not quite as fun these days (whether that's just because I'm older and no better or because a lot of the weird low rent stuff has been replaced with well oiled but boring money making I'm not sure) and that mix I felt as a kid-creepy and fun all at once-is mostly gone now. What's pretty telling is I generally tune out once they are fully trapped in the fun house.
